Sometime about 80AD to 90AD a road was built between Carlisle/Luguvallium and Corbridge possibly by the British governor Agricola. Over the years it became the de facto barrier of the empire with the withdrawal from Scotland. Over the years forts/ fortlets were added. It was a major road 22ft wide.

Haltwhistle Burn Fortlet was possibly added about 105AD, but there is no dating evidence. It is located north of the Military Road north west of the Milecastle Inn, east of the Haltwhistle Burn and half a mile south of the Cawfields car park. It measured 208ft by 167ft enclosing 0.75 acres nearer the size of a Milecastle than a fort. It is visible as an earthwork. The Stanegate passes the south east corner and then heads west.

The west side of the fort has been destroyed by the burn of the same name as can be seen above. Earth ramparts defended it with a stone facing with probably a wooden superstructure. It was probably garrisoned with a century of infantry with no HQ building of commanders building.  The East gate was blocked.

It was occupied until the Wall was built and when the wall was completed the fortlet was demolished.
