Segedurum Roman Fort

Segedunum Roman Museum was a surprise as most site museums are rather minimalistic. It does give you a feel for Roman interiors. The museum shows a representation of the interior of a forts headquarters without a trans hall but with the cohort shrine.

At the back of the Headquarters, on the far side of the hall was the shrine. This is where the cohort kept their cohort standard along with other ceremonial objectives.

There is a display of the interior of a cavalry barracks. It is particularly interesting as arachnologists were having difficulty in identifying where the cavalry stables were located.

It was at the Wallsend Fort where the problem was solved. The barracks were organised with 3 cavalrymen occupied two rooms, one in which the men lived and a second room for the horses identified from the drains from the stables.
